VDA razes illegal constructions

VARANASI: Several encroachment and illegal constructions were bulldozed during the

on-going drive of the Varanasi Development Authority (VDA)
in Asi and Rathyatra
areas on Monday.

Amidst tight security arrangements, the anti-encroachment squad of VDA reached Ravindrapuri by-pass road under the leadership of joint secretary Anil Bhatnagar in the morning. The team initially demolished the encroachment near the under-construction lower income group flats of VDA.

Later, it reached Rathyatra-Luxa Road, where it demolished six illegal constructions, including parts of a restaurant.

Undertrials create a scene in court lock-up
VARANASI: A high drama was created by the undertrial prisoners of the district jail when they were taken to the lock-up of the district court on Monday morning.

The prisoners, whose hearing was scheduled in different courts on Monday, were taken to the district court premises from the district jail in vans. After taking them there, the police kept the prisoners in the lock-up. But, poor cleanliness arrangements and stench annoyed the prisoners. When they knew that the policemen deployed outside were not allowing their relatives and family members to meet them, the prisoners indulged in slogan raising.

Four days back, a dreaded shooter had managed to escape from police custody when he had been taken the district court premises for hearing. For performing laxity in duty, service of three policemen was terminated and they were sent to jail after lodging FIRs against them. Due to that incident, the police had tightened the security arrangements and were not allowing anyone to meet the prisoners.

The high drama continued at the lock-up more than an hour, due to which huge gathering of lawyers and other visitors took place there. Due to the strict attitude of the police, some prisoners refused to appear in the court for hearing. The prisoners were taken back to the jail amidst tight security arrangements.
