The Ganges is the principal river of India and the most sacred river in Hinduism. The source of the Ganges lies at 13,000 feet above sea level, in the forty-kilometer long Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas. From here the Ganges flows through the Northern plains of India, including pilgrimage sites such a Varanasi (Benares), and drains into the Bay of Bengal.
