Bengal water devil reaches UP

Eleven Uttar Pradesh districts are living with alarmingly high levels of arsenic in drinking water, scientists have concluded four years after a 42-year-old Ballia farmer died of arsenic poisoning.

Like Ballia, most districts affected now are in the east, though the problem appears to have travelled further north to Lakhimpur-Kheri, Siddharthnagar and Unnao, too.

In Ghazipur, Bahraich and Varanasi, bordering Ballia, the source of the arsenic is a geological zone, the Bengal delta plain aquifer — an underground layer of water-bearing rock.

Campaign to clean river Ganges

To prevent the holy River Ganga from further pollution, a massive campaign has been launched from West Bengal's Gangasagar, the point from where River Ganga flows into Bay of Bengal.

Organised by Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh, the 99-day campaign named "Ganga Sanskriti Pravah Yatra" which commenced on February 1, reached Varanasi earlier this week.

The campaign would conclude at Gangotri, the origin point of River Ganges on May 11.

SP workers on streets; several hurt in clashes

Arrests and clashes between Samajwadi Party workers and the police marked the statewide protests held on Thursday. The SP has announced massive demonstrations against the state government for banning students’ union elections, kanya vidyadhan and unemployment allowance (berozgari bhatta).

In Lucknow, several people, including a policeman, were injured during a clash between the police and SP workers.

Maya uses religious gathering to sing BSP paeans

It is said centuries ago, Bhakti Movement saint Guru Ravidas, who stressed on a life of simplicity and piety, shelved a “parasmani” (gold-making stone) gifted by famed disciple Meera Bai.

On Thursday, his followers gifted a gold palanquin to the temple in Sir Govardhan village, where the saint is believed to have been born in the 15th century.

The palanquin, fashioned by artisans in Jalandhar and funded by Dalit NRIs, especially those living in Europe, was unveiled by UP Chief Minister Mayawati at a grand function near the temple.

Exporter accused of sexually exploiting Dalit arrested

Five weeks after a young Dalit girl alleged that she was sexually exploited by a carpet exporter in Bhadohi district for 13 years, police arrested exporter Ghulam Rasool on Saturday evening.

“Rasool, the owner of Shining Carpets, was arrested on Saturday evening from Lalanagar area under Gopiganj police station when he was trying to go to a relative’s house after stepping down from a bus,” Bhadohi SP S N Upadhyaya told The Indian Express over the phone on Sunday.

Newlyweds die in road accident in Ghazipur

Hours after their marriage, Pramod and Sadhna, alongwith two other relatives and the car driver, were killed in a road accident in neighbouring Ghazipur district on Sunday.

The mishap occurred in Deokali area of Ghazipur, 50 km from Varanasi, when the car carrying the wedding party collided head on with a truck.

All five — Pramod, Sadhna, Pramod’s brother-in-law Rajendra, his uncle Devi Lal and car driver Rajendra — were killed on the spot, said Ghazipur police officers. The bodies were later extracted from the mangled car after cutting open the frame.
